A health advisory is currently in effect at Bowditch Park on the north end of Fort Myers Beach.
The Lee County Department of Health issued the advisory Thursday evening due to elevated bacteria levels in the water, which are above the accepted state health level.
As of Friday morning, the advisory is still active.
Beachgoers enjoying the sun at Bowditch Park were unaware of the advisory.
"It's good to know that that they're testing the area," said beachgoer David Denison. "I was not aware of anything that was in this area today. I typically either come here or go down to Bonita. It's a little disturbing to know that it's not exactly safe."
Another beachgoer, Mary Alice, commented on the advisory.
"I've always been a beach person, so I guess I'm a die hard beach fan. This stuff doesn't scare me, but it's kind of sad," she said.
The Lee County Department of Health conducts weekly tests of the beach water quality.
WINK News reporter Sommer Senne reached out to the department to inquire if they plan to test the water more frequently due to the advisory.
DOH-Lee responded saying, "When an advisory is issued due to elevated bacteria levels, additional resampling is conducted twice per week until the water quality has returned to acceptable levels. Samples typically take 24 hours to run. The timing of lifting the advisory depends on water conditions and subsequent testing results."
All other beaches in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties have been cleared as safe.
Those planning to hit the beach this weekend might want to consider alternative locations.
