Illegal dumping in Lehigh Acres has become a growing concern for residents. From tires to construction debris and even an abandoned trailer, the problem is more than just an eyesore.
Robert Falkenstein, a local resident, said, "Normally about this time of the year, this is when we get people that dump trash, especially truck tires."
Falkenstein shared that dumping often occurs on back roads like Elaine Circle, where people can dispose of waste without being seen.
In response to the issue, the Lee Board of County Commissioners approved funding in August for a new full-time staff member at Keep Lee County Beautiful. This position will focus on litter prevention and illegal dumping in Lehigh Acres.
Falkenstein said, "Having somebody come along and look out for us from time to time. Deliver some sort of report, get the offenders. Sure. I have no objection to it."
Illegal dumping is a more serious offense than littering, carrying harsher penalties. Multiple departments, including Solid Waste, Code Enforcement and Natural Resources, are involved in cleanup efforts.
Lee County says " If the evidence suggests that a business is responsible for illegal dumping and the estimated volume exceeds 500 pounds, the case is evaluated for referral to a law enforcement agency, such as the Lee County Sheriff's Office or the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Office of Environmental Investigations."
