A suspect is expected to survive after being shot by a Charlotte County deputy near the Deep Creek Golf Club.
The incident occurred on Northern Cross Street and Saxony Circle, just south of Sandhill Boulevard and east of Interstate 75 on Tuesday evening.
Deputies remained at the scene Wednesday morning, with the Major Crimes Unit continuing their investigation.
It began when the deputy responded to a battery call.
Sheriff Bill Prummell described how the situation unfolded.
"While the deputy responded out here, and he was speaking to the alleged victim of the battery, the suspect approached. Some words were exchanged, and a scuffle ensued," Prummell said.
He added that the deputy fired his gun at least three times.
Curious neighbors watched as their neighborhood filled with law enforcement.
Sheriff Prummell provided an update on the conditions of those involved.
At this time, we have not been able to speak to the deputy," he said. "He was brought to a hospital as he was having some heart issues. The suspect was shot at least twice that we know of. He was also taken to a hospital, and he is currently in stable condition."
